Can someone please give an explanation to the degrees in flare fittings and where they are found?

At Home Depot they sell flare nuts in the plumbing aisle that do not say if they are 37 degrees or 45 degrees (or 37.5 degrees). Are they all 45 degrees at Home Depot? Are all the flaring tools 45 degrees?

Thank you for any wisdom here in advance.

Not positive because I rarely go to HD (Lowes is close) but chances are stock fittings are 45 degrees. 37 degree flare fittings are commonly called AN (Army Navy) or JIC. They are not common in homeowner products. They are used in military, aircraft and race car applications where demands are extreme. HD flare tools are likely 45 degree or maybe both. I have a really good flaring tool for double flares and I paid extra for AN dies. On my project car I used AN on the hydraulic clutch line and the fuel lines because I like the braided hoses that are available. Before that I never ran across AN stuff except on my friend’s SS Nova, and he is an aircraft mechanic.

I believe Thomas hit it perfectly for you.

I have a Flaring tool set that was old when I got it 50 years ago, and have never seen a 37, outside of a military surplus item.

Everything for us civilians has always been the 45 degree stuff.

If you're buying them in the plumbing aisle at home depot, they're 45 degrees. If you're still unsure check it with the corner of a square, (if it's a flare, stick the heel of the square into it, if it's a nipple, put it into the inside corner of the square.) if it fits the corner of the square with little or no gap, it's a 45 degree flare.
