I have two doors with splintered wood around the strike plates. One is part of a French door set while the other is just an HVAC closet door.

I'm wondering whether you guys would go with a wood glue to try to fix the pieces (and if so, which one), or whether you would just tear the piece out and rebuild up the surface with something like Durham's water putty. I'm a little concerned about whether it'll hold if I glue the pieces, since there will be some repeated strain from the continuous opening and closing of the doors.

Thanks!

Elmer's glue. And I don't often give my secrets away but in this instance I will being it's a DIY project and your door is broke. :biggrin2: The secret to success with cracked wood isn't so much the glue that's used but getting the wood saturated with glue the full crack length. So, using1,2,3 or 4 strands of sewing thread, more if you like, in a SeeSaw motion work the glue into the crack with glue saturated thread. Take your time doing this most important step.

If the door was off laying flat gravity would be on your side but just as it is it will work if you have patients.

Clamping: those types of glues are low pressure glues and can easily be mostly squeezed out. When you see a minimal squeeze out quit applying pressure. I sometimes do a pre glue squeeze clamping, on DIY jobs like this, to get a feel for the pressure needed to just close the gap.

Any opinions on a particular brand of glue that's likely to help it hold through the stress of the door opening and closing routinely?
use a glue that will work with wood, but also other things = then you have glue for other stuff.

remove the metal. lightly clamp what is cracked. drill some small holes along the crack, blow out dust. remove clamps. insert some nails to spread the crack.
force the glue in the holes you drilled. remove nails. replace clamps, clamping until the door wood is flat.

For me I prefer to use super glue like loctite to bond together the tear part of door.
