I bought a 1962 house. The main water shut off valve is leaking around the packing nut. I tried following online instruction on how to dissassemble it to change the packing washer. However the handle does not seem to be removable. It seems to be part of the stem. No instruction I found mention something about this.

Anyway, I figure this old valve must use some kind of graphite wire or teflon tape instead of a washer. Can i put graphite wire or teflon tape on it and tighten the packing nut to fix my leak?

You would be better off just replacing it with a new ball valve then it should never leak again and will always shut completly off.
