Trying to cleanup bad caulking job in my standup shower. Here is the corner, grout was missing and covered with some caulk. There seems to be empty space in that corner. I would have expected some solid board on which the tiles get installed. Anyways looking for recommendations as to how to fix it, can I just caulk it with silicone? I am worried as there is no backing in that corner.

BTW - Here is the back of the board on which tiles have been installed. This shot is from main shower wall to which I have access from the closet.

Does this tell what kind of board was used to install the tiles? Just trying to learn. Thanks.

Your shower was not built using the best methods---cement backer--taped and filled seams--a waterproof covering over the backer board-

Not a thing you can do about that now--------

Clean that corner well---dry it and then apply a good 100% silicone caulk---

All that old grout and what looks like caulking needs to go first.
There also should have been caulking where that tile meets the tub.
