ok so i need to purchase a lawn mower and i have no idea what to look for. i see some with bags and some without. my grass is pretty thick so i guess i would need the one with the bag? i really rather get a honda, because im a honda guy :thumbup: my property isnt much. 100 x 75. thick grass and its actually very green too lol

I recently bought my mother a Honda mower. Great price and easy to start. I hate the bag!! Get a good mower with a mulching blade and forget the bag!!
For the fall rake the leaves, jump in them a few times and then place them on the garden. Wet them down real good and in the spring turn them into the soil.

Definitely mulch it. It puts nutrients back into the lawn. And with thick grass, as long as you mow properly and keep the blades sharp, it won't be a problem.

Honda is good, but I've had great luck with my push mower. I'm not sure of the brand, I think I got it at Kmart. It does have a 5HP Briggs & Stratton Engine on it. It came with a bag and a mulching kit. That way you can mulch your grass in the summer, and bag leaves in the fall. I always put my leaf mulch into my flower beds or a small compost pile.

Either way, with both options (mulching,bagging) it should help. My mower has lasted 11 years and counting. I just used it yesterday! Check oil regularly and change every year. Also maintain air filters and change the spark plug. Maintenance is the key to any mower product.

If you havent bought one yet, I bought and MTD with Honda motor after 20 years with a used Lawn Boy. Lawn boy was a workhorse but went MTD because they were made locally and everyone I know who has anything Honda loves their Honda motors .MTD has Stainless body, self drive and I thought my wife deserved a new one. I was tired of watching her work so hard while the beer got warm:laughing:

No really, she loves yard work and I am not here often during the daylight so the auto drive gives her a break and now our 13 year old can use it safely as well. e

I have a Honda HRX... great mower (ought to be for the $$$$ I paid for it).

It has a plastic deck and a feature that allows you set the amount of clippings you want to bag, so you can mulch, bag or do something in between.

I have an older Yardman that works fine. Sharpened blade last year.
Went to try her yesterday...A drizzle of gas in the tank. Primed and pulled...Started first time and the rope snapped. Engine running I decide to mow until she runs out of gas...I was dying. Couldn't stop and no eats...Sit down job is killing me. She lasted the backyard. A new pull and good as new.:thumbup:

A lot of mulcher mowers come with the option to add a bag if you want. But, you have to buy them separately. The only reason I could think of bagging is to compost the clippings to use on gardens and plants. Even then, you'll wind up with way more compost than you need.

I have self-propelled mower because my yard has some steep hills and it helps me keep from running myself over with the thing. Although... until I got the self-propelled, mowing the lawn was one of the few forms of excercize I got during the summer.:shifty:

My property is about the same size i.e. typical suburbian home. Three years ago, I inherited a self-propelled 7hp, 21", mower with no bag and now, after some 20 years of doing it with a variety of gas and electric machines, I finally look forward to doing it...

It's a flat property so hills was no excuse. But I like to mulch in the grass clippings and leaves and I get a better lawn because of it, so I tend to spend a bit extra time out there. I weigh down the back flap in order to get that 'golf-course' look, so a self propelled was perfect.

Trouble is, now my neighbours want me to take as good care of their lawns as I do mine, and have offered to pay me. So, economically, it pays for itself, even tho' sometimes I get paid by the beer, as they say.:yes:

ITA with the bolded. We have a huge yard and DH bags grass and leaves. We have a compost pile out back that is crazy, but in a year or so we'll have great soil for all our garden/flower beds.

I'd go with a mulcher-type mower. And get one with the bigger wheels in the back of the mower. For some reason it seems to work better for me (when I actually mow the grass, which isn't much).

We have some mega-horse power mower from Sears and paid dearly for it, but DH loves it and if he cuts the grass it's worth it.
