First attempt at building full fireplace mantel and surround

My mom has been telling me she wanted a fireplace mantel for a while now. I do some wood work, but never built a fireplace mantel before so I was thinking of just buying one and install it. Once I began to look at them online. They were just way to expensive, and to much involved in getting the right mantel to fit the fireplace. So I decided to just make an attempt at building one. Let me know what you guys think. Dont be to brutal now lol.

This is the fireplace. The tiles around it had begin to fall because some genius decided the best way to mount them was with globs of construction adhesive. So I removed the rest of the tiles and that ruined the drywall. So I ultimately ripped the drywall out to replace it.

These next images are the legs for the fireplace surround. I had to do some soul searching online, because I found out there were building codes for these mantels. They had to be at certain clearances dictated by the fireplace manufacturer manual. The house is 30 years old so no manual to be found, but I finally found one online. So everything is with in the minimum clearance or further from the firebox that the manual states combustibles have to be. These next pictures are the surround legs made from MDF
