I have a direct vent gas fireplace; when I shut it down, during the
cooling process there is gremlin with a hammer, striking the steel and making a very loud bang. I can't isolate the loud bang. any solutions.

Metal etc cooling off and contracting . Maybe just a natural event or perhaps caused by installation issues

it's level, installed by the book and works very well except for what sounds like
metal contracting. but it very loud. I think it is the inner chamber contracting
when cooling down. However, I can't make sure. and if so; what can I do about it?
any suggestions. thanks tips

Annoying, but very common with prefabricated direct vent and vent-free fireboxes. You could go in there and physically screw the sheet metal joints together where they overlap.

Mine does that also, metal cooling off.
