I recently removed the existing tile around my fireplace. I replaced the drywall with cement board and prepped the surface for retiling. The metal fireplace insert juts out from the cement board about 1/4". Can I make up the difference using thinset, while tiling, or should everything be flush prior to tiling?

If so, how do you recommend I make everything flush?

Did they specifically say it was an adhesive that would hold your tile to a shiny metal surface? If so, you're good. You will have to do some build up at the edges.
