Hi Guys,

Need a little help planning out how to finish off a fireplace on our basement remodel.

Working with a half basement wall that just had paneling over furring strips. I knew I was going to be dealing with a 2x4 wall that quickly turned into a 2x6 for code.

With that said, the existing brick fireplace recesses 2" at the top to 3" towards the bottom (wonderful I know). I was originally going shim and stack a couple backerboards with a thicker tile to at least flush it out but now I come to find out that the wife would LOOOOVE to wainscot so now I'm coming out yet another 1/2".

Am i gong about this the wrong way with stacking 2 - 3 5/8 backerboards?
