Can you install vinyl siding on vertical 1 x 3's (rain screen) that are 24" OC, or will it get wavy? I've never installed it before. The building is 12' wide x 14' long x 8' high. Extreme heat is not a problem; Fairbanks, AK. thanks.

why are you installig vinyl to furring strips..it should just be nailed on over the house wrap.. vinyl doesnt require a rain screen as it creates its own air space.. only wood and fibre cement need a air space. 24" is too far apart for vinyl also, in heavy winds theres a very good chance it will come off

Your going to need some form of sheathing first, 1/2 CDX or OSB, then some form of house wrap before the siding.
You've already under built by trying to get away with 2 X 3's. The sheathing will help stop the racking and give the siding the needed support.

The vinyl siding is going on a REMOTE wall. There is 1/2" CDX sheathing on 2x4's or 2x6's, then krinkle wrap, then 6" of rigid foam. The foam is held to the studs w/ 8" screws through 1x3's. If 24" OC is too wide, we can apply more firring for 12" OC and screw to the sheathing. Wind is likely not an issue, because we rarely get what most places call wind. But, you never know....Thanks for the replies.
