I apparently can only figure out so much on my own, although I am very proud of where I got to. I recently moved into a house that had a fourth bedroom with two small closets on one wall, and a gap between them. Perfect place a for a desk, and to utilize the space best I decided to build a desk right into it. I secured slats to the wall and cut out a solid piece of wood to fit right in.
Where I'm not having a problem is finishing it. I decided to keep the wood look and applied a coat of poly/stain, the lightest I could find. It looks great, but wasn't as smooth as I wanted so I applied a second coat like the can suggests. I'm not sure if it is going to be exactly what I'm hoping for though. Any suggestions on getting that smooth desk finish? Should I sand it and start over, or did I miss a step? Thanks! :)

Did you sand between coats of finish? Did you use a waterbased stain?

Sand it lightly with 400 or 600 sandpaper or rub it down with 000 or 0000 steel wool and you should be fine.
You will need to know which finish you used. If waterbased poly, you would not use steel wool.
