Finishing Cedar Siding

I just bought a house that is about 30 yrs old and has rough cedar siding on it that doesn't look like it has ever been finished. The bottom is board and batten and the upper/gables is in a lap configuration.
What is the best sealer/finish to put on this siding? We are leaning toward a simi-transparent stain to add a little color to the house. We are planing on brushing it on to keep the mess to a minimum.
