Hey guys, I’ve got a question regarding the exterior of the home. I’m trying to mount up a sun shade sail over our deck. Two corners go into posts in the ground. The other two attach to eyelets screwed into the house. Recently one of those screws pulled away from the house, and siding with it. I thought it was secured in a stud but I found it was just some kind of panel under the siding. This is where I hope to get help from people who know home construction because I definitely don’t!

The eyelet screw I’m using is I think 3” long. It’s definitely a good sized one in comparison to the little guys you might put into a stud to hang plants on a porch. I guess firstly, how do I locate the studs? My stud finder has been relatively useless for this application. Do I need a longer eyelet? Are studs underneath this paneling that’s under the siding?

See attached picture. The eyelet was in the hole above the left corner of the window. Just above the extension cord you see.

Studs are like a crap shoot to find, go for the rim joist of the floor above

Inside measure down from the window to the floor and up from the lower window to the ceiling and on the outside you have an idea where that rim joist is.

Guidance for installing screws or nails into studs if to not exceed 1.5" into the wood as electrical wires are installed to avoid that space.

The paneling you mention is probably the sheathing that covers the entire house on the outside of the framing.

How old is the house, that may help us understand the type of construction. Newer construction may use a different rim construction. But studs should be the same.

To get started, use your stud finder on the inside and use post-it papers to mark what you find. Then we can help you understand the normal spacing.

Try from inside with the stud finder. Just from glance, the window there should have studs and then probably nothing until the inside corner. Studs are usually spaced every 16" and bit less from outside corner.
