Hello! I was wondering if anyone knows if I can put a filter in the return even if there is no holder? I have two units (upstairs/downstairs). They both have filters by the blowers but I've noticed the returns (2 upstairs/1 downstairs) are caked. Do I need to buy a holder or can I just put one in and rest it? Is it okay to do that?

double filtering can really reduce airflow.
(it's not a good idea to get rid of filter at furnace and just filter at grills because most returns leak.)

if you must, use fiberglass only at the return grills to pre-filter the air.

you can buy fiberglass hammock media and cut it to size.
