Filling in hammer marks on stair skirt board? Drywall mud? PIC

Hey guys,

Someone nailed a piece of painted plywood to my stairs and used the treads/risers as a nailing edge so I have a zig zag of hammer marks all the way down my stairs. Would drywall mud be acceptable to putty these? Going to prime with a primer first then fill all hammer marks with drywall mud, then prime and paint. Pic below.

That would work, but I'd use a heavier bodied filler like crack shot or Borden's wood filler. They feather out nice for enameling.

and how does ROCK HARD sand for you, Joe??
The last can of that crap I had ( oh, maybe 20 years ago) I threw as far as i could.
Only good for floor prep before linoleum..imo of course!

I would go with the Borden's wood filler.Dries fast and sands easily.
