Fill question for generator inlet

902 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  sgip2000
I am installing a 50A generator inlet and plan to use PVC conduit and 6ga THWN for the 2 hots and neutral. Should I also use 6ga for the ground?

Also, what size conduit should I use to be in compliance with fill requirements?

Thanks.

#10 copper is okay for the ground. The minimum size pvc is 3/4 but unless it is a very short run I would use 1" as the minimum.

Thank you for the response.

The run is about 3ft. I have 3/4" and 1" PVC so I'll likely use the 1" anyway. Just wasn't sure if I needed to go larger due to the wire gauge.

Short and sweet answer for the grounded conductor you will only need #10 and for the PVC conduit 3/4 inch is the smallest size it will be allow with that combation you posted.

And there is one tip if you used the weather proof box either metal or plastic verison drill a small hole on the bottom of the box so the water can drain out and make sure you pitch the pipe down if possible if run in horztonal.

Thanks for the responses. Your answers have confirmed my plan.

This is the inlet I purchased. There is a small drain hole at the bottom already.

For the anti interlock crowd, I also purchased the SquareD OEM interlock kit for my panel and it is UL listed and compliant.
