I don’t like my red fence stain. (SW deck stain.)

Will a different color cover up the old color? Not sure if it works like paint.

I do not see that happening unless you used a solid stain, and even then it will take two coats.

A solid stain will cover most any underlying stain. As mentioned it could require 2 coats. What color are you wanting to change it to?

Not Doing the big fence, just a small section around my side patio and I guess I’ll use a more of a brown color.

The darker the stain is the better it normally hides the underlying color ..... but it still needs to be a color you'll be happy with.
