The only fence I've ever built was with galvanized steel posts--so I had hardware bolted to it on which the rails are secured.
But, I'm considering wooden posts (on jackhammered post anchors in another thread).
I see a few different approaches. Some appear to have the rails toe-nailed into the posts so that the front face of the post is flush with the rails.
Others show the rails and rot board secured to the front of the post.
It would seem that putting the boards across the posts and not toe'd would be the strongest for the rails.
Also, it's a 6-foot fence with a 6" rot board.
Is three rails too much? The top, middle, bottom, and the rot board below?
