1950's house with old rotting fascia, mostly 1x6, some 2x8's. I am looking to redo on the cheap. I know it will look cheap to a trained eye, but I am considering 1x8x72 fence boards. I will leave a small gap on the mitered joints and fill with caulk (razor for flush) prior to painting.
Am I making a huge mistake with this idea and not seeing an issue down the road that I will regret? Are fence boards sub-par or even lousy for trim?

Plus having to deal with a joint every 6' instead of every 16'.
Most often if it's rotting there's a reason.
Lack of maintenance, not enough shingle over hang, no drip edging, gutters not behind the drip edging, sagging gutters because someone used gutter nails not hidden gutter hangers.
