My house has mostly vinyl lap siding with what I assume to be a fancy upgrade on part of the back. There are wood rectangles with a thin painted veneer on top (which I’ve marked in the picture with red x’s) and vinyl/plastic trim around them and caulk between them. Well the caulk failed overtime and previous to me owning it water got in and rotted some of the wood especially around the edges where it meets the trim.

I can’t find any information on what type of siding this is. It seems really prone to water damage. Is there a way to fix it by replacing the rectangles with something better or should I just plan to rip it all out and go with vinyl lap to match the rest?

Thanks a lot for your advice, Mike

Caulking will will always fail over time.
There should have been Z molding over the tops of all of it.
Replace it all with vinyl lumber and never have it rot out again.
And yes it can be painted with latex paint to match.
