Fan motor / breaker

On Saturday, our ceiling fan started to make a noise while running. At the same time, the breaker for a different circuit tripped. I flipped the breaker on and restarted the fan the breaker tripped again. I flipped the breaker back on and keep the fan off now and the breaker is fine. The fan has been installed about 10 years. Two questions, What happened to the fan? Second, why is something on the fan tripping the breaker on a completely different circuit? I checked the breaker box and the two circuits are not next to each other.

thanks.
