Hi all. Just started working on the exterior of my new pre-1900 house, washing and scraping paint on the back where I just demo-ed a old porch/shed. Anyway, there are some spots that are bare wood (maybe never painted) some sections where the paint came off so easily there are more bare spots and other parts where it'll take a little more work/time to get the paint off and/or get the surface smooth. My question is: should I grab some primer to protect the bare wood now instead of waiting until the entire wall is ready for painting and if so, or whenever I prime -- what's the best primer? Sorry, I don't have pics since I started working on it. I'll try to get some tomorrow. Below is what it looked like before I started. (ignore the pipe) -- that light part is bare wood.

You can wait till a whole side is scraped to prime it. The wood will be fine. Zinsser Coverstain Oil is the most recommended primer on this forum and I swear by it.

My house looks very similar. When I painted the north side a couple of years ago I used PPG Seal Grip primer only on bare wood spots and where I’d sanded and feathered the edges of peel paint. Top coated with Benjamin Moore Aura. What’s most important is to clean the whole area with an anti mildew spray before painting. Obviously, give it a couple of days to dry.
