I Painted A Wood Table With Exterior Satin Enamal Should I Put A Coat Of Exterior Polyurethane Over The Top For Protection? The table will be used outside.

First we must what product they are using.

Polyurethane is great for interior floors and table tops, they are durable, tough, resistant to most things.

Now when you use a finish that doesn't flex and use it for exterior.
It also will subject to UV damage.

These product are called pretenders.


True marine varnishes does not contain polyurethane.
It contains phenolic varnish.

And plus you wont find it in home depot or home centers.

FORGET the Poly!!!

You'll just be maintaining THAT...instead of the paint!!

Poly's suffer faster than actual paint because they're translucent.
PAINT is obviously completely opaque.

Even if you did use a Poly, you'd have to wait a MONTH for the paint to cure-out completely, before trapping it under coats of a Poly!!
You'll be creating more maintenance if you use it, and DOUBLING your workload....

Paint should do the job without the clear coat. As noted by others, the clear coat will cause more problems than if you skip that step.
