Does the door from the main level of your home to the basement need to be exterior grade? Trying to sell a home in Lexington County, SC. and the inspector said I have to put an exterior grade door to the basement. When did this become a building code and do I have to comply if my house was built before this date?

No--However local code might require a fire rated door. That is rare but might be a requirement.

I had the same scenerio recently. We hung a 1-3/8 door (interior standard) on an exterior jamb set. We included the weather strip, threshold, door shoe to seal out the elements. As basements can be different from the weather outside, they can be another energy leak for your house.

So to be honest with you, I think it's a good idea to install all the accessories that make up an exterior package. Try to use a rabbeted jamb.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but I was curious about something in regards to this topic.

I have a basement that is connected to the garage, the garage has a exterior grade door on it for foot traffic, then there are two separate doors going into the basement area. These doors are currently 36" wide. I would like to make one of these 32" if possible, being that I would be able to add a closet next two one of them.

Would this violate code? I will still have one 36" door in the event that big things are moved in and out of the basement.

Thanks in advance!

Andy

I didn't think so, I just wanted to get some feedback on that issue. I think I could put about anything there to include 70's beads that would be stronger than what is up there right now.........lol
