I would like to install a new exterior door and when I removed the interior trim I see the frame of the door but no framing for the rough opening. The plaster was installed all the way up to the door frame. I have attached a photo of the interior side of the door. Any ideas would be great to get me started

I'd be cutting it just below that line where the trim was at the top of the door and remove it all the way to the floor.
Removing that casing on the left side of the door on the right will make it a lot easier to get it out and make the repair.
Install the new door , insulate with low expanding foam then fill in where the plaster was removed with 5/8 sheet rock, it may need to be shimmed out so it comes out even with the plaster.
Lattice works for a shim.
