Extending Ductwork

I removed a wall separating a kitchen and dining (already done). In this wall was a AC/heat duct and a return for same. They now are at the floor level rather than cut into the wall.

I would like install a kitchen island in this location (where the wall was and where the ducts are) and wanted to know if it was OK to extend/run two ducts up into the bottom of the island? Its seems logical that as long as air is free to enter and exit, than no impact would occur.

But, any insight would be much appreciated.

Did these ducts END at these rooms before?
How high were the register outlets before?

OK to extend/run two ducts up into the bottom of the island?

It'll be fine,however you must promise to only cook wonderful smelling foods.If you cook cabbage or fish etc the return will spread those odors throughout the house.

Yes, they did end in the bottom of the wall that was previously in place. The opening was at the bottom of the wall up to about 4 inches high. The return is large though - good two foot span and the heat/AC duct is much smaller maybe 8 to 10 inches across.

So I guess it would be better to have the return setup inside the island on the side away from the kitchen. It is a relatively small house - so there is no escaping a cabbage cook but point taken- Thanks for the info.
