I'm researching making changes to my breaker box and have come across pictures of boxes like this on the net; http://www.electrical-online.com/105_0582.JPG

It surprises me because I thought all wires entering/exiting the breaker box either had to be in conduit or concealed within the wall cavity.

Am I wrong?

We can't expose cable in my area but NEC says you can.

Something about "subject to damage" which is very open to interpetation.

Search article 334 of NEC for romex, NM cable. Exposed is legal under certain conditions.

I may be off base on this but, it looks like a violation of the "Subject to Physical Damage" article. Those cables should be against the wall. Not out from the wall where the wife will find they make good hangers.
