If my main fuse box currently located in bedroom closet and i wanted to hire a sparky to upgrade to circuit breakers would he have to move panel out of closet or is it grandfathered in. I believe nec says panel can't be located in closet any longer. If a sparky has to move it I'm leaving it alone.:yes:

It would have to move, but the it may stay there to be used as a junction box.

Unless your area has some sort of local ammendments, it will have to be relocated.

Grandfathering means it was legal when installed and can remain as is. However once you try to alter it the grandfather clause no longer exists. It must be made to meet current codes. So upgrading to breakers would cause the closet to no longer be a valid option.
How big is it? What type of closet is it? Only clothes closets are restricted I believe. So if it does not have a rod for hanging clothes and is only for storage of other items it might be legal if there are no shelves in front of the panel.

I understand some jurisdictions have whats called a rehab code. NJ being the one that comes to mind. I think you could reinstall it there under their rules, but doing so would be a giant mistake.

ps. Bedroom closet. Definitely cloths. How big is it. 8 fuses. With the two black pull outs on top of the fuses. I can't think what those are called. When you pull those out two round fuse bars are in each. Once again i can't think what those are called.

The round fuse bar what we called them cartage fuse and one of them is the main that useally on the left side of the pull out location while the right pullout is used for range.

The round fuse which it screw in what it called plug fuse.

And that is old style fuse boxes and they are pretty much done useable of their service life.

Check with your local codes if they can allow to remain the exsting location ( I really doubt it unless they say ok only in writing )

Normally I useally converted to the junction box by removing the guts and make a note on them saying " junciton box only no fuses inside "

I have another question. What if the cables don't reach to new location outside of closet? Then would a sparky extend them? Making the old panel a junction box?

Let me explain the exact layout. The box is currently on a interior/exterior wall in bedroom closet. On the outside of this wall is the electric meter. So when house was built i guess easiest solution for sparky. Just put fuse panel on the other side of meter which is bedroom closet.

The old panel can be gutted and used a junction box for the branch circuits with a cover. There is no restriction on junction boxes in closets. The main line feed to the new panel will need to be direct.
