Existing Basement Lights - Finishing Basement

2506 Views 6 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  bergsj
Hi All,

I'm finishing my basement and I have a 60A sub panel ready to go.

However the builder had already installed those cheap pull string lights at various places throughout my basement. Do I need to tie that circuit into my basement sub panel or can I just remove the light fixtures and terminate the wiring? Right now those lights are fed by my main circuit panel which is upstairs...

Any suggestions? What do most people do with existing basement light wires?

Thanks,

Jeff

The pull chain lights usually have power in and then continues to another box. You could remove the pull chain light, but the splice in the box must be accessible and not drywalled over.

Would it be better to just remove all the pull chain lights and all the existing wiring? I plan on putting in recessed lighting throughout my basement..
Do you plan on drywalling the ceiling or using a drop in tile?

I will drywall the ceiling...
If you could find both ends of the wires, re-run without a splice and eliminate the old light box entirely. That can be a lot of work. Why can't the lights stay on the existing circuits?

I suppose my new recessed lights could stay on the existing main panel circuits, I would just like all my basement power to be running from the basement sub panel.
