I am remodeling a bathroom and am changing out the exhaust fan. When I removed the old fan, I found that it was vented directly into the attic. Is this a normal way to install an exhaust fan??

exhaust fans should be vented to the exterior of the dwelling. should you be located in a cold climate moist air vented into the attic will accumulate on the framing and underside of the roof deck where it will freeze. when it warms up it will melt and drop back onto the ceiling and anything below it.

Also depending on your building code it is typically a code requirement to vent to the exterior.

read the manufacturer's installation instructions on your new fan and see what they say.

Moist air in the attic will grow mold, seen it too many times, including my home when I bought it.

I wish I would have known about the fans (two bathrooms) being vented into the attic years ago as we have lived here for 14 years. I would have corrected it then. No visible damage, so I think I'm OK. Thanks for the responses. This is a very helpful forum!!
