equipment ground for old subpanel

older house with the cloth covered wires with no ground wires. subpanel has no grounding wire .May i run a THHN grounding wire back to new main panel box to provide a ground for subpanel? I want to install 6 recess cans down hallway. I will run new NM from cans to subpanel
