Hi everyone,

First off, this is a GREAT site, and have learned many things.

So, I am going to enclose my outdoor porch with two 2x6 walls and a patio door.

The current porch floor is deck board on top of 2x6 joists.

Do I have to pull up all the deck board and insulate the cavities with, say R-20? Or, can I simply use rigid foam board on top of the deck board, then add plywood and final flooring?

And, either way, how to I apply the vapour barrier or do I, and if so where? Tyvek house wrap?

Also, the current roof is 2x8 joists on double 2x8 beam. The roof material is plastic opague sheating that is rippled and rigid. Sorry, don't know the proper term for it.

It would be great to hear from anyone with sound knowledge on this sort thing.

There are probably no footings or concrete stem walls at the perimeter. To put walls in you must have these or a suitable substitute recognized by your local Building Department, who will inspect the structure for minimum safety standards. With the permit in hand, you can prove proper construction if ever needed for a claim with your H.O.Insurance carrier. You may also be liable after the house sale. Existing is a light-weight outdoor structure, different from a habitable space in so many ways. Your insulation choice may work, but I haven't guessed a posters location correctly yet.........

What GBR says would apply to your Edmonton location. And the footings would need to go down below frost, which is below 4 ft, but I forget exactly what Edmonton requires. I haven't lived there since 1990.
