I've got a 6' x 12' section of deck, just outside my front door, that I plan to enclose (a "mud room", you might say). This part of the deck is already covered by the roof of the house. I plan to put 3/4" T&G subfloor over the existing redwood deck (which is in excellent condition) and then frame it up to the existing roof. I'm a little concerned about the lower edge, where the (T1-11) siding will meet the existing deck. It seems that this spot might see a lot of moisture, and it can rain a lot here in winter (Santa Cruz mountains, in N. California). So, is there anything I could do to reduce the chances of moisture problems at the boundary between the deck and the new walls? Thanks.

You need to check local code. They may not allow you to wall in that deck without changes to the structure. Once that becomes part of the house, the rules change.

Thanks for your concern, but, just for the sake of discussion, suppose that one or more of the following hold:

a) All code issues have been resolved
b) We just don't care
c) Compared to other code violations (thanks to previous owners, not me), this would be a minor thing
d) The code people we'd have to deal with are such incredible jerks that it's not worth the effort

Then, does anyone have any comments and/or suggestions relevant to the original question? Thanks.
