We've recently moved into a lake style home, in a very old lake community in NJ. My challenge in closing in this loft is that the stairway tops out at the center of the full height at the peak, meaning a door with a pointed top would be needed if I didn't want to lose an enormous amount of space. I'll try to attach pics later, any preliminary thoughts on this? Doing something "modular" in the sense of being able to take it apart without too much trouble seems reasonable and thoughtful since moving anything up there, such a king size bed was tough with it open, but if it were enclosed it would not be possible.

cut outs in the top of doors is normal up to a point and sometimes you have to put the furniture in the upstairs addition before it is built...

A door coming to a point won't work, it will not open. You will also have to make a removable access to get anything up or down. Make a spiral stairs with a trap door.

you would just need enough clearance from the ceiling but if the ceiling is that low that you have to cut the door i would leave it as is.

It can work but you have to bevel the top of the door which can be a pain with hollow cores for some folks.

A picture would be great. I'm not understanding why a loft needs a door. We have a loft in our log home, and it is completely open to the floor below. No walls, let alone a door.

A spiral staircase is a good suggestion - that's what we have. But some locations do not allow a spiral staircase to be the primary means of access.

Ron, I can't imagine how a door that comes to a point can open, I may not be looking at it right but it seems like the point of the door would hit the ceiling before it opened.

I was thinking of a door cut at a rake hinged on the uphill side. When the door opens the top near the hinges will bind on the surround needing that top edge of the door to be knocked off.

I do that quite often, I just thought I was not seeing the whole picture because you flat out know your stuff for sure.
