I think this is the best spot---what's wrong with it?
i have this elevator lift that requires a key in order for it to work and for it to move i have to press and hold down the button till it reaches my destination. is there a way to make it so that i don't have to hold down the button all the time? also is there a way to use the elevator w/o a key? should i contact a elevator mechanic about this?

if your unclear about anything i said, please feel free to ask me for more details
You really need to contact a company that works on elevators or mobility lifts. You could probably get some leads by contacting a local place that deals with Durable Medical Equipment and the such.

As for holding down the button, it is there as a safety feature most likely.
The key switch is there to keep the grandkids from using it as a toy and crushing one another. The hold down button is so that if the user falls off, he doesn't crush himself.............. or herself as the case may be.

Yep, sounds easy, but you'll void the warranty and possibly hurt yourself or others who don't know how you've Jerry-rigged it.

A button is just a mechanical means to connect 2 wires. Do you have one button for up and one for down? Or does one button do both?
Replace the button with a single-pole single-throw or double-throw switch. Flip the switch and it will hold its position until you get to the top at which point you'll need to flip it back to the neutral position. You should probably leave the key alone.

You can buy a switch at radio shack or Home Depot, but online is best so you can get the exact shape you need. Send me a pic and I can steer you in the right direction.
