in the year 2000, i converted an attached garage into a family room. i installed 4 outlets, did not pull a permit,i am the home owner, live in barnstable ma. i am selling the house now and buyers want the room permitted! electrical inspector states that it must now pass 2011 code. is this correct or a punishment?

The Code cycle that is enforced is based on when the permit was obtained.

If you had done it right the first time, you would have been subjected to the 1999 edition of the Code.

The major differences are AFCI and tamper proof receptacles. So you will need to change the breaker and install all new receptacles provided you were code compliant in all the other areas.
