electrical light circuit crossed with recept circuit

Sounds like a floating neutral. Do you have lights that are excessively bright? If so, call your power company right away. This is a dangerous situation.

Loose connection from that receptacle to down stream receptacles.
Wiggle the plug with the vac plugged in and see if the light flickers.

You guys are probably right. I jumped to a conclusion based on the OP's "other outlets don't work" statement.

When someone makes a post like the OP and asks "Where do I start?", my first impression is to say "Call an electrician".
We know nothing of the OP's capabilities, experience or tools/testing equipment.

Has someone wired an recepticule into a switch loop ?
bad neutral also poss'
Loose connecttion somewhere ?
Unless it's something simple like a loose wire
then it's not really something for a novice to fix.
Recomend an electricain !
