I am rewiring a new house I bought, Where does every one prefer to put their smoke alarms? On the ceiling or on the wall?

When in doubt....follow those written instructions included in the box.

But as Joe says....ceiling is better....but....there are constraints as to how close you can be to a wall....

So....read the instructions....I know it goes against the man code....but sometimes you have to do it....

Most case ceiling but this part for smoke alarm placement this you will have to read the manufacter installment sheet for this and by the way the specfic rules about smoke alarm generally will be found in IRC ( International Resdential Code ) plus there will be your state / local addtional code requirment it may show up.

But try not to put it near the bathroom or kitchens that the two are they will trip by cooking smoke or steam from the shower / bathtub will trip them.

The alarms will be more effective when ceiling mounted as smoke rises and hits the ceiling first. It would need to build down to hit a wall mounted alarm.

You need to be 3 foot away from a supply or return duct or ceiling fan.
