Hi All,

I have just opened up my Maytag electric dryer and found about half an inch of water sitting in it. It is blowing hot air out through the external vent, and the drum is rotating. I pulled the front off and there is some water on the chassis, but the majority seemed to be in the drum. The filter is clear, and the flexible duct to the external vent is clear too.

Any ideas where the water is coming from?

Thanks
Chris

I'd be willing to bet that your dryer is in the center of the house or does not vent directly out the wall. Most likely vents out to the attic and then to the roof. Also be willing to bet that you are running the ac and the return is not to far from the laundry. Anyway what I think it is, is when you run your ac it is drawing the hot attic or roof air through your dryer vent (only while unit is running) and the cold house air is meeting the hot attic air inside your dryer. I've seen this enough times to come up with a fairly easy fix. All you need to do is install a damper somewhere in your dryer vent to keep the hot air from being drawn in through the dryer. I've purchased a few at home depot for around five dollars and just installed them in the flex vent behind the dryer. The only time it will show water in the dryer is when the ac is running and the humidity is up. Generally does not happen at all in the winter

Thanks for your input BayouRunner.

The dryer vents through about two feet of flex conduit to a vent in the exterior wall of the house. One of the vent flaps was slightly sticky and sticking in the open position (now fixed), and we did have to run our AC a few days last week (having to run the AC in Seattle in April?!) so it could be the AC unit drawing air in through the vent.

I'll keep an eye on it to see if it happens again.

Are the clothes unusually wet when lifted from the washer and put in the dryer?

This can happen if the washer is not spinning fast enough for example the drive belt is slipping.

Then water may drip out of the clothes and out of the rotating drum into the chamber surrounding the drum. Since hot air tends to rise, the pool of water collected at the bottom of the chamber doesn't evaporate as fast as you might expect.
