I am trying to install a new sub panel. I seem to recall an electrician once telling me that once the cable is secured in the clamp going into the panel, to strip the sheathing and leave about one panel height plus one panel width of wire (half the perimeter length) inside the panel to work with. That sound right? Too much? Too little? Doing this today. All quick replies very much appreciated!

that would depend on where the lugs were. what you need is enough wire to reach the connections in a neat manner. If entering from the bottom and the lugs and on the bottom then you need very little. Usually the longest will be the to the ground or neutral bar.
