Durock in Shower Alcove

1979 Views 6 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  oh'mike
We are remodeling the basement and adding a bath. The 30" x 60" tub is being built in an alcove along the outer wall. The alcove comes out 34" from the outer wall. Do I bring durock to the edge of the tub and drywall the last 4"? I plan on tiling all the way to the edge. If I am supposed bring durock all the way to the edge, then how do I finish the corner where the durock meets the drywall?

I am at work so no picture for now. The bathroom is 7' wide and the tub is 5' wide. The alcove comes out 4" beyond the tub and then goes one foot to the outer walls on each side.

Oh, that's what I was thinking I was going to do, drywall the 4" beyond the tub and use a corner bead on the corner. If we use 6" tile (not sure yet) then 2" would be on the durock and 4" on the tile. I have not researched yet, but can you put Redguard on the drywall that will be under the tile or is it strictly for cement board?

Out of plumb? As in what sense? What do I need to make sure is plumb to what?

Thank for the input guys.

Gotcha, that corner vertically should be the exact same distance from the outer wall.
