Hi there. I had Duraceramic tiles installed in my basement: the bathroom, bar/kitchen area, and in front of the exterior basement door about 8 years ago. The tile itself is great and has held up just fine (very little traffic). My issue is that there is an unknown substance that seems to come up through the grout. White and brown and can be easily flaked off. This only occurs near the exterior wall in the bathroom and during the winter time (Northern Illinois). What is it? And how can I prevent it?

Hi Jenga,

I'm positive it's efflorescence. Usually it shows as a whitish powder, but yours may be picking up some dirt through a crack in the concrete maybe. Go to this article as it's too long to post here.
