Just curious: are the outdoor units ever mounted lying down on a sloped roof, or must they be installed against a vertical wall?

There has to be air flow through the unit. So no, you can't lay it on a roof and no it can't be mounted against a wall. The installation instructions will provide the specifics.

Do you mean that there has to be an air space between the unit and the mounting surface?
