I am adding electric service to my shop\barn using the same meter and pole that feeds my cabin. Currently the single phase 220v comes down the pole into the meter and from there to a knife switch type box with large 100amp fuses and then underground to the cabin. I would like to replace this box with an outdoor (water proof) breaker box with 2 100amp circuit breakers, one to handle the cabin and one for the shop\barn. Does anyone know of one for this from Square D or other brands? Or is there a better way to handle this? I want the breaker because in both cases the cabin and shop\barn wires go under ground then into their own breaker panels.

Most brands make a panel to do that. I would suggest up grading and buying a 200 amp 8 circuit mobile home panel. You would then have a 200 main to protect both services and you will be able to install your 2- 100 amp breakers. You will still have 4 more spaces to add another panel or receptacle circuits near the panel or any other possible uses.:thumbup:

Get whats called a "meter main" service panel. This is a panel that has the meter and load center in one box. There will be lugs to connect the wires to the house. Then there are a few spare slots where you can install two 100 amp breakers to feed the two other structures. They make for a neat job. You now will have only one meter panel and no need for the fused 100 amp disconnect.
Note: This will make the panel inside the house a sub panel. There are certain rules regarding sub panels you will need to address. Search "sub panels" on this forum for more information than you can use.

4/0 Wire

J.V. the wire runing to my barn if 4/0. Do you think I will be able to bend this around and connect it to the 100 amp breakers in the "Meter Main" box? The run to the barn is 365 feet, that is the reason for the 4/0.

The bending radius will be tight. Hopefully it's aluminum wire, if it's copper it will be tough to bend. Another thing to consider, is make sure the breaker is equipped to handle 4/0 wire. Some are not and they make a crimp that goes on the end of the wire that slides into the breaker.

You can get either a "QO" type: QC816F200C or the "Homeline" type: RC816F200CH which has a 200 Amp main breaker, feed-thru lugs, and 8 branch circuit breaker spaces.

You could use the feed-thru lugs for your 4/0 feeder, since that size cable is large enough to not require smaller overcurrent protection. That way, you would only need one 100 amp breaker for the other feeder circuit.

But if you wanted individual control of each feeder, then you would have to use a special reducer adapter or splice for the wire connection to be able to fit your 100 Amp breakers.

While these can be used for mobile home services, they are not allowed to be mounted on the mobile home itself.

We also use these for many other applications such as farm steads (as in this thread), modular/manufactured homes, new single family homes, temp service poles, etc.

This panel also has a manual generator accessory kit available for legal connection of an on-site generator.

You can use this panel (pictured above) for residential services. Houses and trailers. I would never install a regular meter can anymore. The " meter main" is extremely versatile. Really makes for a good job and gives the HO some flexibility. Pretty inexpensive too. :thumbsup:
