I am considering hanging my new construction drywall and then having professional finish. The small retirement house has ten foot ceilings and ceiling joist on two foot centers. I plan to use 5/8 on ceiling and 1/2 inch on walls.

1. On the ceiling 5/8 what length screws would be recommended and should I use # 6 or 8 and how spaced?

2. On the walls what is the best way to cover the 10 foot wall height. I was thinking about putting the two foot wide pieces on top with the cut edge against ceiling boards leaving the other finish type edges in place. That would be from floor a 4 X 12, stacked on another 4 by 12 with the last two foot piece on top.
Would #6 1 1/4 inch screws be correct for walls and then how spaced?
Please advise on this and any other tips you could recommend. I will have the finishers install the metal corners.
Thanks

Hi JM,
I'm not a pro drywaller so others are free to correct my comments. I would use 1-5/8" #6 screws (because that is what is in my bucket), but where to put the seams I would talk to that finisher. S/he might prefer to have the seams all in the middle, 4-2-4, I'm guessing, up at the ceiling might make for more work.

Thanks for both replies. Joe the link to the USG site was very helpful and answered all questions plus many I hadn't even thought of. I am only considering hanging the drywall because the house is small and I have already done the closets and one wall with T&G white pine. Most of the other walls and ceilings can be covered easily with 12 foot pieces. We have a drywall supply place nearby and they can supply any thing needed.

Use 1 5/8" screws for the ceiling will give you less chance of screw pops or the screws pulling thru, 5/8 hanging on a ceiling is heavy. Use your short piece on the bottom instead of the top. Your baseboard will hide the cut end and your tapered seam will be high enough to finish easily. Remember not to run your board all the way to the floor leave between 1/2" to 1" gap at the bottom.
