I had a shower fixed and they had to cut in from behind the shower to get at the fixtures. The resultant hole is too large to patch. It's about 1x1.5 foot.

I think the correct way to fix this would be to just bring in a piece of drywall and screw it into the studs, tape, mud, and paint. I'd probably widen the hole a bit to better cover the studs for the screws.

How can you tell how thick the drywall is that's currently in place?
