I live in SoCal and am doing some remodeling. I have an add on room that has a couple of walls that are maybe 1/4 inch drywall with a 1/2 inch of stucco type material piled onto it. They are interior walls and I can't figure out why that material would be used. It is a house from the 50s but I don't know when the add on was, prior to the mid 70s at the minimum. It is a room with maybe 18 foot beams across the ceiling, would it be to strenghten the walls?

I hope not as I have already torn the drywall/stucco off. It wasn't easy and it sure is heavy.

thanks
