I will have a new dryer soon and I want to install it myself. It should be simple i am guessing and just need some tips from the experts.

Here are some concerns I have:

- The specs say the gas connection on dryer is 3/8" and my gas connector pipe is 1/2" x 1/2". I assume I will need some connector here? (to go from 1/2 to 3/8)

- Is my gas connector line good (line says 1/2" x 1/2"), or do I need 3/8" line?

- Duct is 8 feet long, and my vent is some 3 feet away from the dryer. Do I need to cut the remaining? Since it's a somewhat rigid duct, can I keep it the way it is and only stretch to the length I need. Right now it's compacted to some 2 feet in length (which I stretch to make it max 8 feet).

- Should I use duct tape along with screw clamps on both ends?

- Which threads do I use the thread sealant on? Does it go here?

Gas line connection at home:

Sorry for a long thread, but I don't want to miss any basic step.:glasses:
It's probably much simpler than what I think.

Thanks

Look at the thread on the gas connector assembly. That is a tapered pipe thread, they get pipe dope. The kind of thread showing on the adapter in the gas valve is a compression thread, those don’t get pipe dope.
You can use an increaser to go from 3/8 to 1/2. It will likely be a 3/8 x 1/2 female/female pipe thread adapter. Use black pipe, not galvanized. Pipe threads get pipe dope.
It needs a gas shutoff in close proximity to the dryer. Can you turn that valve that is close to the floor?
Remove the pipe to compression adapter at the valve and your pipe thread flex adapter should thread into the shutoff. Pipe threads get pipe dope/thread sealant approved for gas piping. Discard that compression adapter.
Screw clamps are sufficient on the vent, but tape won’t hurt. It makes it harder to get apart to clean it later, though.
No need to cut the flex pipe, only stretch it out as much as you need to.

Hard to tell if one side is tapered. Pipe dope goes on here (as in image below), and not on the smaller side. is it correct in the image?

Yes I can turn the red valve off/on and it seems to work good. I tried turning it ON and could smell gas right away.

If it's difficult to determine a tapered pipe thread use your adjustable wrench as a caliper. In a 1 inch length of threaded area the difference in diameter will be 1/16". It will be obvious.:wink2:

Am I reading this correct (image below).
Yes.
Or try removing the adapter from the flex line to see if the flex line will thread on to the adapter on the valve.

Very hard to remove the old adapter on gas valve. I tried to spray with wd-40 on the sides too and still was not able to.
What If I attach the tapered side of new flex line to this compression side of the old adapter. Will this work (image attached)? If I remove the adapter that came with the new flex line, I cannot attach flex line it to the compression side of adapter on the old gas valve.
If this is good, do I need pipe dope on (inside of) tapered side here too? I am confused, probably not here!

Also, this tapered end of adapter fits in perfectly on the gas in for the dryer. So, pipe dope goes on the short black pipe of the dryer, and then I screw this tapered adapter on it. Correct?

Your excitement is good. But, I would suggest ask an expert to do it. One of my uncles tried doing it, he did it but not in the most correct form, so, there was a need to call an expert later. So, why not call him before itself.

I wanted to do it correctly. I was able to remove the old adapter using a pipe wrench and WD40. Was using pliers earlier, and then researched a little and used pipe wrench and after a little while it moved. thanks for all your help guys. It does look perfect. Dryer vent seems to be good, and gas line was tested using soapy water and I did not see any bubbles.

Well done and worth a truck load of thumbs.

And remember, gas gives us a warning and in general needs a air fuel ratio of approx. 14 to 1 to be explosive, but electric doesn't give a warning. Electric would rather just kill us instantly.
