My house was built around 1985 and the dryer circuit is 3-wire. The cable that was used is a black NM cable labeled "10/3" but doesn't say anything about a ground. However, I opened up the dryer receptacle box and I can see paper like the type used to insulate the ground wire in NM cables. Could it be that the ground was snipped at installation since it wasn't required?
By the way, it's a round shaped NM cable like most 3 wire + ground cables are.
