Hello,

I was replacing a toilet last night and had a mid-size measuring tape attached to my belt. It slipped from the belt and landed straight in the sewage drain. It happened too early for me to cover the drain hole. I tried pulling it out, but it disappeared. I ran water through the drain to check if it has clogged the drain, but the water seems to be flowing through. I've installed the toilet and water seems to be running through no problem. The drain pipe is 4" and should have enough space for the water to flow.

Should I just leave it there and hope it will get pushed out someday? Is there a way to remove it?

Thanks for your advice.

That's likely to cause you some problems sooner or later-------

What's the plumbing like in the house? Iron--plastic---slab house or frame---first flood or second floor?

When the piping clogs you will need a plumber with a camera to find that---How big was the ruler?

The drain pipe is clay and it occurred in the basement. The tape was 100ft. long.

Do they have a tool to catch it and pull it out if they locate it with a camera? I'm afraid of using the snake as it may push it out further and in the main pipe.

That will be up to the plumber---likely the spot will be located and the area excavated and the object surgically removed.

Rotten luck---I have had a similar experience, but the piping was in a crawl space so cutting the pipe was all that was required.

There are several good plumbers here with camera experience----let's see what they have to say---

Hopefully soon---Mike---
